Reading the high-water line

Gravel and sand bars are the standard river campsite for good reasons. They are open, flat, and breezy enough to keep insects down, with clear sightlines for weather and wildlife. The catch is that you have to pitch above the current water level, because the river can come up while you sleep. Why the flattest spot is often the wrong spot

The flattest, softest, most inviting sand on a bar is usually the lowest, because that is where fine sediment settles when the water is higher. It is genuinely more comfortable and it is the first place to go under.

The rise most often comes from something happening far away from your camp. An upstream dam release, a storm over a tributary you never see, snowmelt spiking with a warm afternoon. There is no signal at your tent that any of it happened until the water is closer than it was, which is why the rule is a margin rather than a judgment call.
